The Inteational Maritime Organization (IMO) has revised the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) Convention to require that shipping containers have a verified legal weight. This is a new condition for loading packed containers onto ships for export. Now, shippers are responsible for the verification of a packed shipping container weight. This new regulation is to be legally effective on July 1, 2016. After that effective date, shippers will be in violation of SOLAS to load a packed shipping container onto a vessel if the marine terminal operator and vessel operator fail to have a verified shipping container weight.
